Well, it finally looks like summer has arrived. The weather has been slowly improving over the past few weeks, and as we take a break for a month the cricket action seams to be warming up too. At the time of writing, England have just set an unwanted record in losing their first ever match to the auld enemy, Scotland. What a game for the spectator, but hardly the best preparation for a summer of One Day Internationals and the World Cup early next year.
Locally, our league sides have all had a few ups and downs, with no-one really staking a huge claim for honours. In the Cotswold Hills League Premier Divison, Alcester & Ragley have fallen away after their strong start and are now in sixth spot, one place above local rivals Exhall & Wixford.
Temple Grafton are struggling in Division Two, having won just two matches. Great Alne and Bidford are towards the bottom of the table in Division Four; however it’s in this league where Exhall & Wixford’s second string (featuring a few wily old veterans) are shining; currently the pick of the local sides in second place.
Over in the Worcestershire League there are contrasting fortunes for Harvington and Cookhill in Divison Five; Cookhill are languishing at the bottom of the table having won just once, whilst Harvington are a handful of points outside of the promotion spots in third place.
So, I’ll be back in the September edition when we should know a little more about who may be claiming some silverware this summer!
